"At age Eleven or Twelve, Sacagawea along with another girl was kidnapped from her Shoshone tribe by the Hidatsas. The other girl later escaped and was returned to her Shoshone people. Toussaint Charbonneau, a fur trader, guide and interpreter, purchased Sacagawea. She was six months pregnant and living with her husband at Fort Mandan when she first met Lewis, Clark and their men of the Corps of Discovery." ["Lewis & Clark Among the Indians", James Ronda] In our book Lewis & Clark Volume One, I wrote about the purpose of the expedition and the creation of the Corps of Discovery. In this, the second volume, Lewis & Clark - Volume Two Quilts Inspired by Bird Woman, I focus on Sagagawea's life and her children. Seven wonderful quilts, five of which are pieced, two appliqued. Along with the projects, we include writings from Lewis & Clarks journals and stories about the expedition. Dozens of drawings and sketches of animals and plants found on the journey. All of the projects in the book are pictured to the left. |
