Taken from her new book of the same name, Terry will talk about the high style quilts and the wonderful fabrics of early America. She will also discuss Tidewater quilts of Virginia, white work, political/patriotic quilts, and the use of Eagles and Liberty Caps in early American quilts.
Our focus will be on fabrics and high-style quilts at the time of the American Revolution. We will study the quilts women were making while Burgoyne was surrounded, Jane Austin was writing her novels, and the new American flag was flying overhead. We will study images of Liberty in quilts, share our family stories, artifacts, documents, and any related subject that you would like to bring to the class. You may bring your own handwork of works in progress or work on a small project provided by Terry. The project is a woman's sewing pocket.... here's the supply list.
Terry tells the story of her family and their move by covered wagon to the uninhabited frontier of Kansas in 1874. Terry will share her family stories of a courageous pioneer woman and the quilts inspired by her life on the prairie of Peace Creek, Kansas. Please bring quilts to show & tell - old or new.
This day is for sharing quilts and stories from pioneer days. You may sew if you wish or just come and absorb the history presented. In this program, Terry will discuss 19th Century appliquéd quilts particularly the 36 4-block quilts. Terry explores the design sources for the patterns and her theories about why they were so popular between 1840 and 1940. Terry will show slides of these quilts documented in the Kansas Quilt Project. Also shown are appliqué quilts from her own collection and 36 quilt blocks made by friends to help in her book research of these wonderful quilts. Members are encouraged to bring appliqué quilts to show and tell.
Students have a choice between Appliqué by the Yard or Piece by the Yard projects. Terry demonstrates an appliqué stitch that is fast and easy, and will change your approach to hand appliqué. Throughout the day she will demonstrate machine appliqué with freezer paper, how to make bias stems with a 1/2 bias maker, berries, dog tooth borders, flat piping, and how to mark your borders with her Vine Line tool.
